After loosing another love Hugh L'Angelier, a Lamia, i.e. Latin term for
vampire is terrified of risking the chance he will kill another in his quest
to become mortal. A vampire who gets essence from the desires of others, he
and the woman who created him, continue to feed off the passions of others
in order to survive. Things change when Hugh comes across Anna Trezise, an
oddity, half Lamia half human created while her mother was attempting to
become mortal with a human male she loved. Anna has been having visions for
years, which have become the inspiration for her magnificent works of arts.
Unknowingly she is seeing the passionate encounters of another Lamia, she
finds herself every full moon searching for lovers who can assist her with
the heat that drives her to the edge of madness. She is aware of what Hugh
is especially how they can help each other. Anna becomes obsessed with the
idea of them performing the ritual that will give them a chance at a mortal
life and intent on convincing him to take a chance on the strength of their
love.
Forever frightened that he will be the cause of another woman he loves meet
with death, Hugh adamantly refuses to try the sacrament that will give him a
chance at happiness without the oppressive restrictions of needing to feed
off other’s desires. Hoping the connection he feels for Anna isn’t a sign of
the depth his feelings will eventually sink to he fights every step of the
way the need and love he starts to feel. Anna on the other hand is
aggressive in her pursuit to end the existence she’s come to dread. Her
feelings for Hugh aren’t something she doubts and in her heart and mind she
knows they are the answer to each other’s dreams.
Normally it’s the woman who hesitates and the man who takes the commanding
role but in Redemption, the women of the tale take charge when faced
with a man who has yet to overcome his fears of a past mistake. I actually
found it exhilarating to see a woman who wasn’t prepared to accept only what
was offered by the man she loved but was willing to risk everything to have
it all. I found the story to be sweet but just a little too tame for my
tastes. The third primary character seemed to be more passionate than the
couple in this story.
